Cultural appropriation (Wikipedia): “A sociological concept which views the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of a different culture as a largely negative phenomenon.”

Cultural appropriation (Urban Dictionary): “The ridiculous notion that being of a different culture or race (especially white) means that you are not allowed to adopt things from other cultures.”

Jen Scharf has been teaching these free yoga classes for the university’s Centre for Students with Disabilities for the last 7 years. The Student Federation of the University of Ottawa (SFUO) suspended the class indefinitely because they received ‘questions about the issues and ideas around it’, whatever the hell that means.

Is the student union really claiming that there are cultural sensitivities and issues around a free yoga class? The instructor never said it was anything more than a physical experience! An exercise class! She even offered to change the name of the class from ‘yoga’ to ‘mindful stretching’, but it was rejected because there is apparently no french translation. Here are some: ‘étirements méditatifs’, ‘étirements spiritueux’ ou peut-être ‘étirements contemplatifs’ as suggested by the satirical reddit forum commenters.

What’s next? No more zumba for white people? Am I still allowed to eat with chopsticks or is that also offensive?

I think this is exactly the kind of segregation we have spent countless decades battling. C’mon Ottawa. I get that you drape yourself in political correctness, but I think this has gone too far.
