Kidney stones are not very fun. They are painful to pass and may even require surgery to remove if they become lodged in the urinary tract.
Historically, kidney stones have been most common among middle-aged white men. A recent study found the prevalence of kidney stones to have increased most notably in young children and adolescents, women and African Americans.
The reason for this upsurge is unknown. Speculation as to insufficient water intake, poor calcium and high sodium intake as some potential causes. Luckily, researchers have some advice to help you avoid the dreaded kidney stone: lower blood pressure by eating more vegetables, limit sugary drinks and even have coitus.
