Diet and exercise, they tell you, is the key to weight loss. Unfortunately, the science says otherwise. Although exercise is fantastic for health, those looking to shed a few pounds should proceed with caution when incorporating exercise as a weight-loss tool.
1. The amount of calories you burn working out (in blue) is so small in comparison to your body’s other uses for energy.
2. Exercise can make you hungrier and thus, eat more.
3. It may make you less likely to ‘sweat the small stuff’ like take the stairs, park farther away from the grocery store or go for a walk after dinner.
Don’t let this discourage you. Physical activity provides an insurmountable amount of benefits (improved blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep, attention, mood, etc.) and is crucial to a healthy lifestyle.
